Alakesh Maity, Midnapore, July 11, 2026: Allegations have surfaced regarding an attack on Tapas Sinha—a CPI(M) state leader and former All-India General Secretary of the party’s youth wing—in Midnapore on Thursday night. This incident has triggered tension within state politics.
According to sources, Tapas Sinha was returning home on the night of July 9 after attending a council session of the provincial Krishak Sabha (Peasants’ Association) in Midnapore. It is alleged that a group of miscreants accosted and attacked him while he was on his way.
The CPI(M) leadership claims that individuals associated with the BJP and RSS are behind the attack. Sinha sustained an injury to his right arm and is currently undergoing treatment. Images circulating on social media show him seated with a bandage on his arm.
Speaking from the hospital, Tapas Sinha said:
“We conduct our movements through democratic means. This despicable attack—carried out while I was returning home after a meeting regarding farmers’ demands—proves that the opposition wants to silence dissent. I am not afraid. The people of the state will give a fitting reply to this assault.”
He further stated that three or four individuals surrounded and beat him during the incident, also threatening to kill him.
Left-wing leaders have voiced strong protests following the incident. The CPI(M) State Secretariat issued a statement vehemently condemning the attack and demanding the immediate arrest of the perpetrators.
On the other hand, the BJP leadership has denied the allegations. They counter-claimed, “This is the result of infighting. Attempts are being made to gain political mileage by dragging the BJP’s name into it.”
Upon receiving news of the incident, police from the Midnapore station visited the scene. A case has been registered based on Tapas Sinha’s complaint. Police sources indicate that CCTV footage is being examined and efforts are underway to identify those involved.
The attack on an “innocent, respectable, and veteran Left leader” has naturally stoked fresh political tensions in the state. The opposition has raised questions regarding law and order. All eyes are now on the direction the police investigation takes.
