Kolkata/Newtown Correspondent: A three-year-old girl died after falling into an open, eight-foot-deep water tank at a residential complex under construction. This tragic incident occurred on Sunday at the AL1/B/29 (Block A) building on Street No. 15 in Newtown.
The deceased child’s father, Rajib Das, is the caretaker of the adjacent building, AL1/B/6 (Block B). A low wall separates the two buildings. The little girl would regularly climb over this wall to play at the neighboring building.
On Sunday, while out to play, she fell into the open water tank—which was essentially a deep pit—located right beneath the wall. A search was launched after she was found missing for some time.
Megha Singh, the caretaker of the neighboring Block A building, claimed she was the first to retrieve the child from the tank. She said, “I pulled the girl out of the pit and shouted for help. It seemed she was no longer alive.”
The contractor is facing scrutiny following the incident. Residents allege that the eight-foot-deep water tank had been left open illegally and with gross negligence.
Bithika Mondal, a resident of Block B, said, “Can a water tank be left open like this? A child has lost her life.”
The police have initiated an investigation into the incident, and allegations of negligence against the contractor are being examined.
